China has taken a different path. Rather than banning social media outright, the country has implemented strict behavioral restrictions through what is known as “minor mode.”

Digital platforms and devices must provide special settings designed specifically for young users. These features include:

The issue is no longer theoretical. It is becoming part of the region’s digital governance agenda.

Critics, however, question whether education alone is sufficient. While digital literacy programs can help children understand risks, they may not fully protect younger users from environments designed to maximize engagement and capture attention.
